After reading the question posed by C., I got inspired. In today’s world of text messages and emails rarely do people write letters, but yesterday I began writing. I wrote of politics, elections, and change. I wrote from an honest heart that is full of conviction and hoping for positive change. My letter was to Barack Obama. After calling his senate office in Springfield, IL, I addressed placed a stamp on and mailed the letter (I was hoping the the postal attendant would not notice the name on the envelope and laugh at me). I doubt that I ever get a reply from the President-elect, but I sent it just the same, if for nothing else my own sense of patriotism and optimism. Here is my letter:
Mr. President-Elect,
I must begin the letter by being honest with you, I did not vote for you. With your past agendas and voting history I felt that I could not personally support your candidacy because of my own beliefs and convictions. There were obviously enough Americans who thought that you were the best man for the job seeing as your received more votes for the presidency than any other man in history. Congratulations!! I am sure your achievement is a great milestone for you personally. I also recognize the even great milestone it is for African-Americans. I would like you to know that I am praying for you. You have the opportunity to be one of the greatest presidents in American history and I am praying you make the right decisions to unify our country and be such a president. While I am sure you will do things as the president that I do not agree with, I will continue to pray for you, your family, and your elected position as our nation’s leader. While I know we disagree (sometimes strongly) on certain issues, together with people of this country, we have the opportunity to make our nation a better place. It is up to you to follow through on the promises you made to bring us together. The potential before our country is enormous, but if we stray from the path that potential will fall away. I want you to know that I did not vote for you as a candidate, I do not agree with much of your past agenda, but I do support you as our countries new President.
