I have had rare moments in my life were I have stopped simply to appreciate exactly were I was in life. They are moments that unforgettable and unduplicatable. While the majority of my life I am looking forward to were I am going, or back to where I have been, these rare moments stand out as monuments to periods of my life. The problem with these moments is that they are gone just as quickly as I realize that they are here. Life moves forward and while the memory of the moment may last tomorrow I am older, tomorrow I life continues, tomorrow the things that happened yestarday are only memories.
With all this talk of change it draws our focus to what was and what will be. In the John Mayer song, “Stop This Train,” John writes (and sings) of not wanting to move forward. The chorus of the song says, “Stop this train, I wanna get off and go home again. I can’t take the speed it’s moving in. I know I can’t. But honestly, won’t someone stop this train.” Mayer’s lyrics ring home in many peoples live. While life is barreling down the tracks we are just waiting for the it to stop so we can get off and go back home.
In the song Mayer sings about asking his father for advice, “Had a talk with my old man. Said help me understand he said turn ‘68, you’ll renegotiate. Don’t stop this train. Don’t for minute change the place your in. Don’t think I couldn’t ever understand. I’ve tried my hand. Tried honestly, will never stop this train.’”
We talk about life as if we have a choice about if we change or not. No matter who wins the next Presidential election our president will change. No matter how much you may like the place you are at right now in life, it will change. So appreciate where you are now for what it is because it lasts only for a moment.
