Curtis the soon-to-be-married wants to know what my “dailies” are in terms of web content. Great subject. I’ve been wanting to do a favorite links thing for a while now.
I guess I should note that there’s a difference between what we list as “favorites” and what I actually cruise regularly. So I’m sticking with the latter. Two are already links on our site here, but deserve another plug. These are in no particular order, but here’s a “top ten.”
Google Reader. I have my own daily magazine, custom-built by yours truly, updated hourly. Right now 58 different sources educate, feed, inspire, challenge, or entertain me – all waiting patiently for whenever I have time to dig in. If you don’t have your own RSS or web reader, you owe it to yourself to check it out. I have cancelled nearly all magazine subscriptions, and have more content at my disposal than ever.
Seth’s Blog. There are two blogs I read immediately when they come in. This is one of them. Seth Godin is the author of Purple Cow, The Dip, All Marketers are Liars, and a host of other resources for people trying to get a message out. But his blog is one of the best ever in terms of ideas, public relationships, effective presentations, and sometimes just life.
Ed Litton. I mentioned there are two blogs I read immediately. This is the second. Ed Litton is a pastor in the Mobile area who writes about once a week. Last year his wife was tragically killed in an auto accident. Ed has done the world and the Body of Christ an enormous service by transparently walking them through the grief process as he walks with Christ in the midst of it. Anybody in grief or ministry should keep this site bookmarked. Without a lot of fanfare, it’s one of the most important contributions to Kingdom life and my ministry I have ever read.
Challies.com. Tim Challies is a Christian, Calvinist, Canadian uber-blogger. A voracious reader and reviewer, a thoughtful analyst, and a cultural observer, his site and daily ala carte are worth a daily look.
The Internet Monk. Somebody broke the mold, then God made Michael Spencer. He ticks me off, inspires me, challenges me, and mocks my blog. But he’s refreshingly honest, uncomfortably prophetic, and will make everybody mad sooner or later. Then he’ll surprise you with the most tenderhearted, encouraging word at just the time you need it most. Buckle your seat belt, then take a look at this.
Site Meter. I check Site Meter about five times a day. It’s a great way to measure and analyze the traffic on your web or blog site.
Jon Acuff. Jon is the brain behind Stuff Christians Like, which I just reviewed a few days ago. In addition to that, he writes The Prodigal Jon, and 97 Seconds with God. He is a brilliant, incisive writer, and is dang funny, too. Check out his take on the Prodigal Son. Powerful!
Sports Sites - Atlanta Braves and NASCAR.com. Boogity, Boogity, Boogity! Let’s go racin’ boys!
Avoid Being an Idiot. See the review on Rhett Burns’ site about ministry and discipleship, Carolina-style.
My Dad’s Blogs – Jim and Ole Red is about life on the family farm – past and present. Horse Sense Safety is a review of one of his areas of professional expertise – construction safety. People worldwide are discovering his site.
Honorable mentions:
In addition to all our own sites – Lifevesting, Any Idle Day, Pax Per Pugna, and Dying Truthfully, along with the Nfusion blog at Turning Point Community Church – these are sites I grab whenever I get something new or have time:
Romantic Date Ideas, Brazen Careerist, the Broken Photo Pool (love it!), and Robert Fulghum’s Journal.
