This is an interesting topic, I’ve got to say. It’s as though C has run out of things to spend time in the ether looking at. It’s crazy to think of how vast the Web really is… mind-boggling, at time. We all most definitely have our particular websites that we browse, most of us everyday. From blogs to ‘zines to online bookies (eh… I mean “books,” like in “libraries”), we all have the sites that make getting on the information superhighway actually worth it. So, without putting any in there to make myself look more intellectual or theological, here are the top ten websites I peruse, with a few close runners-up.
- Pyromaniacs (http://teampyro.blogspot.com) - I was introduced to these guys by A, who had been a fan for a little while. This website is a team blog (sort of like the idea behind Synerjack), with all the bloggers enjoying poking fun at one another, bringing up random topics and questions, and poking fun at the Emergent church (to which many Emergents boo-hoo about them not being tolerant). They even have a “Weekly Dose of Spurgeon” to inspire us by the words of the great Reformed theologian, C.H. Spurgeon. Watch out for the pictures of Spurg, though, they might freak out your kids (or inspire your teenager to new fashion statements).
- Pax per Pugna (http://www.paxperpugna.blogspot.com) - Yes, this is my personal blog where I don’t spend near enough time writing posts or trying to spruce it up. I sometimes come up with a pretty decent mini-essay or thought, so I’ve got to say that it’s worth at least five minutes. Plus, there’s a really handsome picture of me (courtesy of James Price Photography, Lubbock).
- Men’s Health (http://www.menshealth.com) - O vanity of vanities! I like to check out Men’s Health, not for the “sex tips” or anything like that, but rather to see if there are any new exercises to add to my workouts or new recipes to try (I’m particularly stoked about lamb burgers with smoked mozzarella!). It’s also occasionally got some pretty good stories. Last, the “What to do in Your Down Time” section is usually a pretty good guide to what’s on TV, decent books, and the semi-often good band to listen to.
- iTunes - A lot of people ask me where I get my crazy eclectic taste in music and how I hear of so many different bands. I love iTunes because it connects listeners to other bands that are similar, Indie music is not looked down upon, and you’ve got everything from the latest Beck album to John Denver all available in digital rendering. Not to mention the fact that they’ve got some pretty great podcasts, too!
- Waratahs Rugby (http://www.nswrugby.com.au) - Yes, this is an Australian website… but it’s home to one of the greatest rugby club teams on the face of the planet, the Super 14 New South Wales Waratahs. What is a “waratah?” you might ask… just check out the website, and behold some of the greatest rugby in the universe.
- Pandora Radio (http://www.pandora.com) - Internet radio, pretty much at its finest. Choose your band and the station will begin playing, pulling up your favorite and then finding bands that have a similar type of sound. If you don’t like something you’re listening to… just hit the “thumbs down” sign and move along.
- Heavy Ink (http://heavyink.com) - I am a huge dork and willingly admit that. So, it is only right that, in my top 10 sites to check out, I would have a site completely devoted to comic books? Heavy Ink combines reviews of different comic books with a sort of MySpace profile system, plus you can buy all sorts of different comics from there (where you don’t pay for shipping and you get a certain percentage knocked off the real cost) and even have them give you recommendations as to what you might like.
- ESPN (http://www.espn.com) - Need I explain? I enjoy sports, especially knowing how the DC Nationals are doing. The only time I really don’t care that much for ESPN is during the winter, when it’s just a slam-dunk showcase mixed with some great one-timers and face-offs from the NHL.
- The Cool Hunter (http://www.thecoolhunter.net) - Website that promotes the newest in what is “cool.” I typically check it out to see new trends in architecture (the one from earlier this week of a house on the Canary Islands was incredible) and to laugh at the “new” trends in fashion (which are really just remakes of stupid-looking stuff from when I was three and four.
- Conquer Club (http://www.conquerclub.com) - Introduced to this site by one of the other pastors at Turning Point; it’s basically like a big version of “Risk.” Build up your armies and crush your enemies. Scary how much like Napoleon this game can make you feel and think!
Also, coming in as close runners-up, you have: Facebook, Resurgence, Frank Turk’s personal blog, the Black Calvinist, CAO cigars, Padron cigars, and La Flor Dominicana cigars, apple.com and eBay.
