My iconic hero growing up would have to be Leonard…no not the famous artist and inventor, but the turtle. The teenage mutant ninja turtle. Not this new TMNT crap, or the new cartoon series where fighting turtles have no pupils, but the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles where turtles had grinning faces and were accompanied by their lovable Sensei Splinter. The original movies also fall into this category: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III. The movies that had large rubber turtle suits placed over actors. I’ll take those turtles over CGI any day of the week.
Out of all of the turtles Leonardo was my favorite. Looking back he possessed all of the qualities that I desired as a kid. He ran around using his ninja training to fight crime, his weapons were a pair of katana swords, he was the lead turtle, and best of

all, his favorite food was pizza. I idolized Leonardo. I wanted to be just like him, so much so that one of my birthday parties was a ninja turtles birthday party complete with Leonardo cake, napkins, plates, and even my own Leonardo costume. Not only did I have a Ninja Turtle party and costume but I had the ninja turtle sheets, sleeping bag, videos, and most of all I had (and still have) the original Ninja Turtle action figures.
Today, I am not much different than I was as a child idolizing Leonardo. I enjoy (and most likely always enjoy) debating, I still want to fight. Today I use my bible to do much of my battling, I still love to use my sword. I continually read books and listen to audio seminars on how to be a leader to others, I still desire to provide leadership. And of course as a man there is pizza, I still enjoy to eat pizza. Leonardo and his fighting ninja turtle brothers played a key role in my development both as a boy and a man.
