Back in the olden days, there used to run a commercial of a bear built like Dick Butkus, who powerfully told all of us that only we could prevent forest fires. To a six year old, smack in the middle of Cheerios and G.I. Joe, Smokey was both a comforting usual on Saturday and a commanding presence. Smokey is one character from my childhood who I still adore and wish we saw more of today. Some of my buddies and I all have what we call “power animals” and mine, of course, is a bear. This is mainly based on my admiration of Smokey, but also just because I can’t reach my back and must resort to scratching like a black bear on a stump. I still get excited when I pass through Capitan, New Mexico, Smokey’s home town. I still consider getting him tattoed on my ankle (of course, the wife has definitely nixed that one). We all have images from our childhood that bring back memories. For me, Smokey will be a life-long icon of my childhood, but also of how much I simply love God’s creation in nature! What are some images from your childhood that make you pause and reflect?
