The Ten Books I would Want My Grandchildren to Read
Okay this was my idea, but the guys were right. This one was tough. I started with a big list of books that greatly impacted my life somehow. I then filtered them through what could make a difference in my grandchildren’s lives. I pretty much did the same thing for the movies list. Here they are, in no particular order.
Destined for the Throne by Paul Billheimer.
The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
The Friendship Factor by Alan Loy McGinnis
Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven Covey
Knowing God by J. I. Packer
What Color is Your Parachute? by Richard Bolles
Men are From Mars, Women are From Venus by John Gray
Through Gates of Splendor by Elizabeth Elliott
The Search for Significance by Robert McGee
The Pursuit of God by A. W. Tozer
Ten Movies
Dead Poets Society – “Carpe Diem… seize the day, boys!” (Got the whole world wanting to learn Latin)
Fiddler on the Roof – “Money is the world’s curse!” “May the Lord smite me with such a curse.”
Chariots of Fire – “When I run, I feel His pleasure.”
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy – “Frodo: I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened. Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
The Mission – “If might is right, then love has no place in the world. It may be so, it may be so. But I don’t have the strength to live in a world like that, Rodrigo.”
Rudy – “He’s so little!”
The Lion King – “Remember who you are.”
Star Wars – Episode IV (the original) – “You can kill me now, and I’ll become more powerful than you ever imagined.”
Schindler’s List – “I wish I could have saved more!”
Rocky – “I just want to go the distance.”
Ten People in the Bible
Mary, sister of Martha - She “got” Jesus like no one - no one else did.
David - Heart of a warrior, soul of a poet. Other than Christ, the most affirmed man by God in the Bible.
Joshua - Did in a matter of days what Moses didn’t do in 40 years.
Joseph - Broke his family’s curse of dishonesty and family bitterness; saved two nations.
Ruth - Demonstrated the meaning of true commitment.
Nehemiah - Led people to do in 52 days what couldn’t be done in 40 years.
Paul - Greatest Christian who ever lived.
Abigail - incredible combination of strength and beauty.
Deborah - God’s warrior woman.
John - Son of thunder, apostle of love.
Ten People Outside the Bible
Abigail Adams - Profound wisdom and character - should have been the first woman president. Called John, her husband, “Dearest Friend.” I love it.
Ronald Reagan - Raised a nation from despair with a message of hope and conviction.
Jim and Elizabeth Elliott - He for laying down his life for the gospel. She for the excellence of her writing and the profound strength and wisdom of character.
Winston Churchill - lest my grandchildren be like the 24% of Brits who think he was a myth.
St. Francis of Assisi - kissed the lepers of his day, and kissed his materialistic fortune good-bye.
Hudson Taylor - founder of the China Inland Mission.
Duncan Campbell - understood the nature of God-sent revival.
Martin Luther - shook the world with three simple words: “Here I Stand.”
Abraham Lincoln - the most examined president in history. Most admired, too.
Robert E. Lee - Brilliant leader, strategist, man of conviction, man of great faith.
Ten Places
Royal Gorge, CO – both the bridge and the river
Washington, D.C. – anywhere, but particularly Ford’s Theater
Somewhere in Canada, under the Northern Lights
Great Smokey Mountains National Park
Millry, AL - Lonesome Pine Farm, Deer Bluff
Thailand
Israel – the Steps of the old Temple, the Sea of Galilee, and the Garden Tomb
Daytona, Bristol, and/or Indianapolis Speedway - preferably with a race going on
Gettysburg, PA - the real tomb of the unknown soldier, and the closest thing we have to holy ground. Even Lincoln said so.
Stone Mountain, GA – 30 minutes after dark in the summer on a blanket.
